A power tablet for gamers

Senior correspondent Grace Chng on her standout products featured so far at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

Two gadgets caught my eye at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Firstly, gaming company Razer has a bold and stunning gaming tablet concept.

Code-named Fiona, it is a tablet souped up to play PC games such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Tom Clancy's HAWX 2, and Assassin's Creed: Revelations out of the box.

Steve Jobs: Child, college kid, lover, manager and leader

Take a documentary tour with Grace Chng as she thumbs through books written about Apple's co-founder

Many books have been written on Steve Jobs, of which several are unauthorised biographies. Others analyse his business strategies and how he saved Apple from bankruptcy in the late 1990s. Some examine his leadership and management styles as case studies for business schools and a few even discuss his presentation methods.

All in, there are more than 30 books about him, some written as early as in the mid 1980s, with many written between 2009 and 2011. Presumably the latter titles were published with the knowledge that Steve may not have long to live.

In my ebook library, I have about six

Goodbye Steve

Grace Chng pays tribute to the role model tech wizard

Steve Jobs appeared gaunt at the 2011 Apple developers conference in June. His traditional black turtle neck, t-shirt and jeans, hung on him.

He sounded weak. He introduced the key presenters such as Mr Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing head.

But I believed Jobs was on stage to give heft to the product announcements and to show shareholders that he was still in charge.

iPhone 4S still packs a punch

Grace Chng tells naysayers why the updated iPhone 4S is still a force to be reckoned with

There is no iPhone5. Instead you get the same look of the iPhone 4. An iPhone 4S instead was announced by Apple early Wednesday morning (Singapore time).

However, do not be deceived. In the old body is a set of new tech innards.

What Singapore consumers will get when they get their hands on the iPhone 4S on Oct 28 is a phone which can, among other things, take much sharper images at faster speed, play more graphic-intensive games, download data faster, and take high-definition video.

The Amazon-Apple war is on

Grace Chng tells us why Amazon can succeed where others failed previously, in trying to burst Apple's iPad bubble

Go to the Amazon website (www.amazon.com) and a letter from its chief executive Jeff Bezos greets you. It says that it is a company that 'works hard to charge consumers less'.

With this message, Mr Bezos launched its attack at the tablet market.

On Sept 28 at 10am (10pm Singapore time) in Manhattan, New York, Mr Bezos lifted the curtain on four new products: the all-new Kindle for only US$79 ($102), two new touch Kindles – Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G – for US$99 and US$149, and a new tablet class – Kindle Fire - a full colour 7-inch device

Big challenge for little camera

Tan Chong Yaw relates his experience using compact cameras to shoot a cover photo at the National Day Parade rehearsals

Those around me were whipping out photographic gear that costs thousands of dollars – per component.

My stash was a collection of compact cameras, none coming remotely close to even a grand in cash.

Happy birthday, IBM

Grace Chng celebrates 100 years of IBM

June 16 is the 100th birthday of IBM.

My first close experience with IBM is through the Selectric typewriter which was used in The Straits Times in the mid-80s. There was no ribbon unlike the manual typewriter. Instead there was a golf ball-like device that rotated and pivoted to the correct position before the letter hits the paper.

Although the Selectric typewriter was very popular, it was IBM’s work in computers and computing research that turned it into a global giant. Ranked the 18th largest firm this year in the United States (US)

The date iPad 2 will sell in Singapore

Mark your calendar as Grace Chng predicts the date Apple's iPad 2 will be available in Singapore

CONSUMERS here will soon have a wide range of new computing tablets to choose from.

Next week, two Taiwanese makers, Asus and HTC,  will unveil their models.

On Tuesday (April 26), Asus will lift the cover off its unique tablet cum laptop called the Eee Pad Transformer. The 10.1-inch screen slides into a keyboard dock and becomes a laptop.

The lost art of activism

Jonathan Wong asks, is fighting for a cause diluted by online protest groups?

A memorable scene in David Fincher’s brilliant film The Social Network occurs when Mark Zukerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg), while staring at his laptop, tells his lawyer that he’s checking in to see how it's going in Bosnia.

“Bosnia? They don’t have roads, but they have Facebook,” she replies with mock bemusement.

Perhaps she is right, and there appears to be no restrictions to what social media is capable of. It transcends barriers, the physical ones at least.

StarHub’s Popbox makes entrance at IT show

Sherwin Loh on StarHub's Internet TV on-demand service

StarHub is prepping its hardware for a roll-out of its upcoming Internet TV on-demand service.

The cable TV operator will be offering a device called Popbox, which combines a media player and Internet content streaming device, in an exclusive deal with the device’s local distributor servTouch.

This device is expected to be the conduit to StarHub’s Internet TV service, which Digital Life first reported last September.
