I SEARCHED for "Apple tablet" on Google and in an instant I had 25 million references listed.

Wow! For a product that hasn't even been launched yet, that's a lot of publicity without Apple having to pay a cent for it. This is Apple's unique marketing strength: keep absolutely silent and let the masses talk for you.

In two days' time, Apple unveils its latest creation is Jan 27, just two days away when the company's top honcho Steve Jobs is expected to take centrestage with his latest creation.

The excitement is palpable for two reasons. First, it will be a pleasure to see Mr Jobs making a presentation again, if only to see that he is still alive and kicking, though I think he may still be gaunt.

Second, people are eagerly anticipating what the rumoured Apple tablet will do. A few friends have told me they will buy it without seeing it. Others are holding back their netbook purchases to see what the new gadget will offer.

To sum up what the speculated Apple tablet can do, it will let people listen to music and watch movies.

Bookworms will curl up on a sofa with it to read the latest Dan Brown novel. Students will use it to read text books while business folk will get their daily dose of newspapers on it.

Content can be downloaded over the air via 3G or Wi-Fi. Colour is a given, so is the 10-inch touchscreen.

All the buzz about Apple's latest creation has led to online bookmaker, Paddy Power bookmaker taking bets on what Apple's latest gadget will be called. Topping the list of 17 names is the hot favourite iPad which has 1 to 5 odds followed by iSlate, 9 to 4 and iTablet 10 to 1.

Apple's competitors are not keeping still. Last week, in a pre-emptive strike against Apple, online book retailer, Amazon said it will let third-party programmers build applications for its Kindle e-reader.

The apps will include games. According to telegraph.co.uk, video games publisher Electronic Arts is building some games for the Kindle platform while Zagat city guides will also be available on the device.

But my hope is that whatever Apple's latest creation is, it will be sold in Singapore.
