The real victims of recession
January 07, 2009 Wednesday, 07:49 PM
Ho Ai Li thinks those who have the least are likely to be hit the most.

I WAS away from Taiwan on a week's leave.

On my return, the news was still full of stories about how former president Chen Shuibian, and pandas Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, are spending their time behind bars.

Amidst these undoubtedly riveting tidbits about what the trio ate, there was a very sobering Page 1 article in United Daily News about two people who probably had very little to eat.

Madam Tsai Hsiang-lan, 89, and her son Chang Chin-sheng, 56, lived together on Chao-an Street, in a poor part of Taipei. Tsai, who had diabetes, was bedridden after her legs were amputated.

Chang quit his job as a furniture mover to look after his mother but could not find another one. He scraped a living from the odd job, odd loan from neighbours and government aid. But he had not been able to pay rent for eight months. And things did not look like they were improving when his assistance pay-out expired last month.

On Saturday, mother and son were found dead by a neighbour.

It was first reported that Madam Tsai might have starved to death after her son froze to death while using the toilet. A neighbour who was interviewed said that the duo did not have a single blanket or jacket. But coroners have since put her death down to old age, but discovered that he had killed himself by swallowing disinfectant.

The sad story gave many a glimpse into the lives of those who lived on the margins, even in a relatively rich society like Taiwan.

It also brought home how those who have the least are likely to be the ones who suffer the most, in the current economic downturn.

Writer Chang Ta-chun said the tragedy showed how the government had failed in its duty to take care of the people.

What is being done to make sure that there would be no more Mr Changs and Madam Tsais?

President-elect Barack Obama’s selection of Nancy Killefer to head the office is part of the economic stimulus package that is the first goal of Obama in his first term on order to boost the ailing economy of the United States. Her duty will be to eliminate unproductive government programs and ensure that taxpayer money does not go to waste. A Chief Performance Executive makes sure that the services or products that a company offers performs up to standards, like payday loans, and the Obama administration will need all the help it can get. In these dire times in the economy, we cannot afford to waste any more money on unnecessary dealings. Hopefully Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan will bring the American country out of recession and restore confidence into the heart of its people. Of course, like I stated earlier, accomplishing this goal will need the full support of the entire Obama administration. Good article. There are many more who died of hunger and sicknesses due to poverty in many other countries. I wonder if the writer had been to those countries? Now that the article of such topic is written, what practical actions will the writer take? Nothing, right? Just like all others who read the article. That is why while I am writing this article and you are reading this article, those people are still dying of hunger and sicknesses.

Fortunately, you have leave to run out of taiwan, now taiwan face the phenomenon of incompetence of taiwanese government, not recession itself. taiwanese are always arguing "Love Taiwan" or asking whether you are real taiwanese or not, and can speak whatever you want and can do whatever you like. Down here Singapore got many races, nobody keep asking you whether you love Singapore or not, are you a real Singaporen?
Miss Ho, it is not recession, taiwan accumulate so many problems and issues then encounter big change will make things worst. why? back to 1988 when Lee DenHui took the office, he did not do his job properly only paid attention to concrete his power, then Chen shuibian took office in 2000, he was quite dedicated to laundering his money(based on the evidence found out by special investigation division) and made taiwan in isolated position.
now, financial crisis coming, which can discover taiwan's vulnerable situation in many aspects due to no long term strategy and policy.
Singapore can have one cashcard to pay for ERP,carpark, till now taiwan still can not provide this fast and efficient services, it is a indication of resolution of government.
President Mr. Ma he visited Singapore at the early of 2008, he said he should learn from Singapore like a CEO manage company, he took office last May, you can see how he manage this country, no idex no target, how?
Taiwan does not have effective rules to select good people to lead the country, only depend on vote is not enough.
Taiwan still have long way to go to find out the truth of democracy, i think you also can sense the crisis up there.

"But coroners have since put her death down to old age, but discovered that he had killed himself by swallowing disinfectant."

Need to amend this sentence. The 'he' is ambiguous. Should be replaced with 'her son' since the first reference was to Madam Tsai. And there are too many uses of the word 'but'.

Very good article.

Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with recession, so the title is misleading.

But it's done a good job in reminding us that despite the 'hardships' experienced by the rich and the middle class, thanks to the financial crisis, they should still consider themselves fortunate compared to the world's poor who continunousy and silently suffer society's disertion and apathy with or without recession.
