Lots of water but nothing to drink

Nic Yong ponders love and loneliness on Valentine’s Day.

SO it’s Valentine's Day again.

There'll be chocolates and flowers, and perfume and kisses. Softly spoken words and promises made.

And a fleeting, transcendent moment of happiness; for all the florists, restaurants and chocolate shops out there.

As for those of us living in the apparent "abyss of soul-crushing sadness" that is singlehood, we'll probably be curled up like a foetus in bed as we drown in a sea of loneliness.

Seriously though, the day will simply pass like any other. Then once it’s over, life with all its varied demands and requirements will go on.

So what do single people see when they look at the world? Most of the time, there's a lot of water around, but nothing to drink.

Maybe that’s why we aren't heeding the government's call to get married and make babies like our lives depended on it.

Personally, I like to believe Oscar Wilde was right: a man can be happy with any woman, as long as he does not love her.

Before you start drafting those hate mails to ST, let me say that I do believe love is a possibility. But where and when does it come?

In the words of Blaise Pascal, the heart has reasons that reason cannot know.

Somehow, the right one always comes along when we aren't ready. And then, just when we are, the wrong one does.

Unfortunately, most of us are unable to make the distinction just when we need to.

Searching for the "one" gets pretty tiring after a while. It doesn't take long before it starts to feel like chasing shadows.

After all, how long and how hard can you try before it gets too trying?

Eventually, you realise that sharing your life with someone only means something when that someone is worth sharing it with.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. Enjoy your special day, and tell the one you love how much they mean to you.
