S'pore F1 a roaring success

Lin Xinyi says this could be the best Grand Prix ever.

WHEN was the last time 100,000 tried to squeeze into a sporting event in Singapore?

Never. But it has finally happened at the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

A sold-out crowd filled the Marina Bay circuit all for the same purpose - To be part of history as the world's first Formula One night race flags off in the Lion City.

But organisers Singapore GP have went the extra mile to make the experience even more memorable and to attract repeat customers over the coming years.

Mobile discos have proved to be a smash hit as F1 devotees partied before and after the race. A myriad food stalls showcase the country's gourmet, especially to our visitors from overseas.

And the word out on the street circuit is that this is the best Grand Prix ever, rivalling the picturesque Monaco and eclipsing Britain's historic Silverstone . Even Formula One Management supremo Bernie Ecclestone has given the island an emphatic thumbs-up.

Singapore has got off to a flyer in her maiden F1 lap. With the country given a five-year deal to organise the race, the stakes will be even higher next year as four laps remain.

Totally agree with all the positive comments about Singapore’s F1 night race. It was an incredible experience for me, a first time F1 viewer. The only real disappointment for me was the lack of information available at the course itself. The TV systems were far too distant to make out anything other then the color of the car (which I could see from my seat) and the complete lack of broadband service was quit a shock. Here I was all ready with my new dual-mode phone but not a single wireless broadband network to be found. I know Singapore spent a large amount of money creating the Wireless@SG network and brand which I thought it would have easily extend it to the seating areas for the race but sadly I had to sneak peaks at the wireless TV my neighbor next to me rented in order to know who was winning and what happened around the next turn. I hope Singapore can extend its great digital city to the track next year… See you in 2009!!

This F1 in Singapore is amazing. It makes me so proud to be a singaporean. I'm a soccer guy but just hearing the cars roar is fantastic. I'm starting to love F1 already. I will definately buy tickets for next year race.

Absolutely brilliant against a fabulous nighttime backdrop of Singapore.
And it looks like your PM's answer to why no rain was due in part to the public holding chillies and onions to the sky and it worked. Ha ha.
I am on the other side of the world and witnessed the F1 on ITV1. It was nuffin short of proper TV broacasting. Dont know where you got your TV pix from in Singapore; but cant believe that Mediacorp had the capacity and ingenuity to transmit and broadcast as professionally.
