Puea Thai: PPP's Noah's Ark?
August 18, 2008 Monday, 04:40 PM

Nirmal Ghosh predicts Puea Thai will become a Noah's Ark for MPs from the PPP.

In Bangkok

REPORTS have emerged that a new, registered party called Puea Thai will be a Noah's Ark for MPs from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) if the latter is dissolved.

Readers of my reports will know that the PPP may be dissolved because of electoral fraud committed by party executive Yongyuth Tiyapairat, former Speaker of the House during his election campaign in Chiang Mai last December.

The Election Commission is due to decide late on Tuesday whether to recommend the PPP's dissolution to the Constitutional Court. If that happens, the court will deliver a verdict sometime before the end of October.

Some reports suggest that the Puea Thai (which means ''For Thais'') will have its headquarters in the Shinawatra Silk building on Bangkok's Sukhumvit Soi 23, which is owned by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's younger sister Yaowarat, and has been recently refurbished.

The best part about that, for me, would be that it is on the same lane as my apartment, which doubles as The Straits Times bureau. It is just 50m up the road!

There are some reports that the PPP has already made contingency plans to replace its billboards and other publicity in the north east, with the Puea Thai name.
