Electronics prices not so fair?
December 08, 2008 Monday, 10:41 AM
Abdul Hafiz asks why a video camera costs much more at a fair than online.

SINGAPORE, one thinks, is where eletrical goods come at fair prices. But not always.

I have been looking for a video camera to record family events, but prices have left me scratching my head.

The price for the Canon HF100 - a high-def cam - is at a "promotional" price of $1,899. Some "freebies" have been thrown including a $180 Swensen voucher.

But on Canon's USA website, the suggested retail price for this video cam is US$799. The same cam is sold on Amazon for US$529.

That works out to around $800 here.

That means there is more than a $1,000 price difference for the same product.

Why?

Why?
Simple, just because the mid-men (can any any numbers) between you and the manufacturer. And each just want to profit a'little' % and there you have your sale price in our island.

Anyway hope you enjoy taping with this overpriced vi0cam, hanif. (smile). watch some real video from Penang at this www.cacare.com Some one may just be helped along your way. (smile again)

It is true... things here are more expensive. The marketing here is more sophiscated. The retailersadopt bundling techniques to make the things appear cheap. In reality some of the bundled items we do not need..

Of course, the difference goes to the distributors. But whether they are making big bug or not, I don't know as the high business cost ( rents, GST, salaries ) in Singapore may be a big factor.

take note that US is selling NTSC version while Singapore is selling PAL version, and for some unknown reason PAL version is always more expensive than NTSC version. Though, that still not explain why there are so much differences in pricing, it's generally true that US electronic goods are cheaper than Singapore, and Singapore electronic goods are not cheap at all, it's only cheaper than EU countries only.
