Why such a sloppy show?
November 05, 2008 Wednesday, 11:16 PM
Amelia Tan explains why university students will benefit from dressing well.

WHEN I was studying at the Nanyang Technological University, I used to frown upon students togged in skimpy tops, midriff-bearing shorts and slippers.

I would think to myself: “My mother would never let me go out of the house dressed like that”.

The issue of school dress raised its head recently when the The Management Development Institute of Singapore started cracking down on students, banning mini-skirts, tube tops, facial piercings and flip-flops among a host of other things.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a member of the fashion police.

I don’t think my university attire, which comprised mainly of jeans and t-shirts, qualifies me to judge.

But I think sloppiness is unacceptable.

I asked my friends who stayed in residence why they turned up for classes in what looked like sleepwear. Think threadbare t-shirts, running shorts and plastic slippers.

They told me they saw no need to dress up as they had no one to impress in school.

I disagreed. As the saying goes, clothes make the man. It says a great deal about how you view yourself if you turn up everyday looking bedraggled. It shows a lack of interest in learning as well as a lack of respect for your surroundings and classmates.

However, it was not all bad. My classmates and I started to dress better after we returned from a six-month internships during our third year in university. From our interaction with our colleagues as well as meeting other adults in the work force, we learnt the importance of looking presentable.

Many of my lecturers said they look forward to seeing the annual transformation of their students from sloppily-dressed youths to polished adults.

The Management Development Institute of Singapore does seem to be coming down hard on its students. I hope school officials will lighten up a little in the time to come.

But I feel in the long-run, students will benefit from the new dress code. Learning to take care of their image will put them in good stead when they enter the workforce.

Amelia, if you probed in-depth you would discover the truth behind those "sloppy" dressing...i.e...they think they're in the Western world and it's cool to look like Tom, Dick, Harry, Jane, Janet or Mary.

What those SUM students didn't know is that, in the West, there're heaps of destitute students.
And, the other two true reasons are: bad time management and of course, sloth. Believe me, sloppy dressing is not a trend. It's a true projection of poverty, irresponsibilty and sloth.

So unless they're fall in this category, someone has to tell them...please don't copy blindly. It'll only sadden mom!

i think many are missing the point here. It is ok to dress casually but not ok to dress SLOPPY. Those who get the point but are still kicking a fuss up here are simple being defensive beings who attend classes in their PJs & flip flops. There is a need to dress appropriate for every situation we are in and I agree with the author here. There is a big difference between these 2. A well put together casual outfit even with t shirt n jeans or even shorts may not be sloppy altogether.

"As the saying goes, clothes make the man. It says a great deal about how you view yourself if you turn up everyday looking bedraggled. It shows a lack of interest in learning as well as a lack of respect for your surroundings and classmates."
I think what the author is trying to say is whether the person even MADE THE EFFORT to ensure that he looked appropriate and presentable before stepping out of the house. It isn't about how he eventually looked when he stepped out of the house but rather how he prepared.I believe that if he tried, we would be able to tell. I think this reflects the attitude of the individual in pursuing excellence and how he wishes to be viewed. Assuming all other factors held constant, Would you rather hire a sloppily dressed employee or another who puts in effort to improve on dressing among other essential workplace skills?

No doubt in the work place it is important to deliver, but before the employer even gives you a chance to perform, do you dare say the first impression (meaning how you looked before he finds out more about your character & personality) he has of you doesn't count? Any one tried interviewing for a job at a bank / law firm with flipflops and got a job apart from the kopi aunty?

I dont see why the author has to put up with your nasty comments when it is true. Those who don't see her point probably lack of exposure to good dress sense or simply isn't open to someone else's opinions which may be useful for yourself, It never pays to be kind does it?

I think sloppy dressing is not acceptable in campus. What's so difficult dressing properly during study. Your brain don't freeze not wearing your fav minis or even that tube top, or even that toilet slippers you like so much! (hah)This is not a question of rights and freedom. This is basically follow the rules when you are in ..well..anyplace that you happen to be. There must be some form of discipline even in dresscode. Rules are set about to bring order. We are moving forward into the future and television are showing celebrities in skimpier than nothing and trends are spilling out onto the streets. I believe there is a place where you can dress as such.. in the bedroom!

Education involve disciplining the spirit of the pupil, so say the sage. Judge not the book by its cover. Reflect and gain insight of purpose of dressing to learn, if not you miss the point of modesty as woman in this naked world; not learn to dress up or dress down. The dress reflect the spirit within.

I sympathise and pity our children-pupils from kindergardener 1 up to universities because the national education system has lost the core purpose and real spirit of educating the citizens to be thinking and innovative thinking people . We sent our children to school to be educated , not tested.

People who share a sense of purpose and community can help one another get wgere they are going more easily because they are travelling on the trust of one another.

Our citizens-choldren should be educated on core values :-
integrity, value adding to other communities worldwide, courage, committment, and compassion for humanity. Outstanding performance results from quality humane honking! Just like the migrating wild geese flying in V formation taking advantage of the lift created synegistically, HONK! HONK! Keep inspiring us with your heartfelt blogging , Amelia Tan, thanks.
