Can't let our guard down
November 29, 2008 Saturday, 08:24 AM
Mathew Pereira on why everyone should be vigilant at all time against terrorism.

The Mumbai terror attacks claimed a Singaporean victim when lawyer Lo Hwei Yen, 28, was confirmed among the dead last night.

She is the first Singaporean to die in a terrorist attack.

This must be one of the more painful stories I have read in a long while. Sure, terrorists attacks happen all the time, but it is difficult to be so stoical about it especially when someone from Singapore is killed.

It sometimes irritates me when jokes are made about the need to be vigilant to report unclaimed parcels, etc.

It is a serious matter, no country can afford to let its guard down.

My condolences to the family of Lo Hwei Yen.

Violence is not an answer to any grevience you might have against any other group or religion. The terrorists rationalise the murders they commit by stating that they do it as reprisal against the injustice done to their religion/race long time ago. Unfortunately so many races/religions have been persecuted over the years. We cannot go about seeking "justice" using violence. Violence begets violence. The avengers now will become the persecutors and this vicious cycle will continue till we destroy this beautiful planet of ours. Peace is the only answer. Religion is supposed to give us peace, every religion is a way to God. The only way to tear down terrorism is for the moderates in every religion/race to speak up so their combined voices will echo above the militants. Help your community by educating the people, overcoming poverty and improving their standard of living.

Philip Woo, I found your statement "So sad that a bright Singaporean goes this way" bordering on the tasteless. If not offensive.

So, if an ordinary Singaporean with no degree, a blue-collar worker who died in exact same circumstances, is NOT WORTHY of YOUR SYMPATHY?

Your statement is no different from those "She is Hot. What a waste" made by folks who surely were in the toilet when god was giving out brains.

C'mon guys, just give it a rest. No amount of preparation by any armed forces are set to deal with terror attacks like these. When the terrorist hit, those soldiers had to reasses their trainings and improvise. They manage to get all the baddies,right?..We have our own security fumblings like the mas Selamat case too.
And don't believe Taiwanese press so much. We should always rely on professional panel in this area not tabloid makers.
Main point is that we have to always keep our guard up to prevent recurrence. My condolences to Ms Lo family. This is truly tragic.

Come on, let us (the ones with brain and heart) not fall into the trap of those people. No matter what questioning and doubting we have, we can't bring back those who perished in this tragedy. There is only ONE direction that all of us should target out time and effort on, that is the enemy at the other end whom are confused as what they should be getting in return. I am sure they are equally confused in themselves and thus doing all these sorts of inhuman things.

Philip Woo
The troops that went to battle are from India's NSG, which i trained in Hostage rescue situations.
1. Would you have asked the same question for USA, if it happened there?
2. What would the troops gain by shooting a women when they know all the terrorists were men?
3. Has any country till now, fought a 3 day battle in hotels & high rises, till now?
Doubt mongering can harm the morale of the people of Mumbai who are recovering from a traumatic experience. If you can't support , it is OK. But atleast stop this doubt mongering.
